Programming & Services:
· Provide a varied programme of activities, for all
· Ensure that notice is given prior to any change in the programmes or services
· Offer alternative services, refunds or membership extensions for unforeseen interruptions to services

Staff:
· Have a senior member of staff available to speak to you at all times
· Have staff who are friendly, helpful & knowledgeable
· Have staff who are trained and qualified to industry standards

Access

Entrance

Is the facility well signed & easy to find?

Yes - Waterworld is situated in Trenance Leisure Park, off the A3075 Edgcumbe Avenue, newquay, Cornwall. Other attractions in the park include Wooden Waves ramp park, Heron Tennis Centre, Newquay Zoo, Pitch & Putt, Crazy golf, Miniature Railway & Children play areas. There are flags and pictorial signs at the entrance to the park.

Are there ample disabled parking bays?

Yes there are 7 parking bays - drive past the zoo entrance and the parking bays are on the left side of the car park up the slope by the zoo perimeter fence.

Is there a parking charge?

From 1st April to 31st October parking charges apply. Disabled card holders please check the tariff board on the parking meter near the disabled parking bays. Residents of Restormel can get an annual parking pass from Waterworld reception for an administration charge of £3 per calendar year.

Is it front door access for wheelchair users?

Yes - there is a flat path from the disabled parking bays to the automatic main entrance doors

Do you have to telephone before to gain entry?

No

Is there assistance available?

Yes - if you would like assistance and use of our pool hoist please ask for the Duty Manager at the reception desk.

Are the reception desks split level height?

The gym desk is split level height, but the desk in the main reception is quite high. Future development plans include alterations to the height of the desk and extending it to provide a third customer sale point. Work to start Winter 2008

Is there an induction loop system on the reception desks

We have an induction loop on the main reception desk and gym desk.

Signs/Assistance

Have the staff had any disability Awareness Training?

10 key staff received Level 1 training in IFI Disability awareness and 4 gym instructors received Level 2 training which helps them to deliver a safe, appropriate and value for money exercise programme.

Are there any braille signs in the facility?

Yes - we have replaced many signs with braille ones and have ordered some tactile numbers for some of the lockers in the gym area

Changing rooms, toilets and lockers

Do you have disabled changing facilities & clothes storage?

There are three disabled changing rooms complete with shower, toilet, hand basin and wide changing bench. All have pull cord emergency alrms fitted. They are situated for use in:

Gym, Fitness Studio 1, Swimming Pools

The main locker room is adjacent to the pool changing facilties. There are also lockers in the gym changing room area. There are no lockers in the fitness studio 1 disabled changing room.

Activities

What sort of activities are available and are they accessible?

Swimming pools

Access to the pools and disabled changing facilities are through the changing and locker rooms and the doors are lightweight. There is a pool hoist available for use in either the 25metre 6 lane swimming pool or the Fun Pool. Please request this at reception so that the Duty Manager can have it ready for you once you have changed.

Life Fitness Gym

The gym has gained Inclusive Fitness Initiative Accreditation (IFI) and was launched as an IFI centre on 18th January 2006. There are ramps and a passenger lift to the first floor gym. The gym entrance doors are lightweight and the recption desk is just inside them. There is a qualified Instructor on duty at all times the gym is open. A platform lift is fitted in the gym to take you to the lower gym floor area. The IFI has accredited a range of fitness equipment so that the majority of disabled people can access a comprehensive cardio-vascular and resistance based workout.

Fitness Class studios

There are two fitness class studios which run classes such as Aerocycle, Pilates, Step, Cardio Sculpt, Calorie burn hour, Fitball workout, Circuits, NRG workout, & Boxercise. Studio 1 also doubles as a meeting & training room, mainly for staff use and occasionally running courses. Studio 1 is only accessible by means of going up an internal ramp, out through a fire exit and up an outside ramp into the back exterior door. Studio 2 is not accessible from the reception, but could be accessed via an exterior door.

Catering facilities

Is there a Cafeteria or Bar?

No

Are there Vending machines and what do they vend?

Yes - There are two vending machines in the main reception a kids healthy drink machine and a multi-vendor selling crisps, and a choice of healthy snacks. In the poolside spectator area there is a 'Bean to cup' Hots drink machine which sells Fair Trade freshly ground coffee choices , hot chocolate and tea and coffee. Near fitness class studios 1&2 there is a Lucozade drinks vending machine. In the gym there is a multi-vendor selling bottled water and various snacks. All vending machines are easily accessible.

Spectator areas

Are there spectator areas and are they accessible?

Yes - The fun pool spectator area is accessible via a ramp - the doors are quite heavy but a staff member will be happy to assist you. The 25m pool spectator area in accessed from the same ramped area but with no doors to navigate.

Retail sales

is there a shop?

No - A small range of retail goods are available for sale at reception such as swimming costumes, trunks, swim shorts, armbands & goggles, fitness clothing etc. A wall vending machine is situated in the female changing room selling plasters, anadin, ladies hygiene products, condoms etc. A nappy vending machine is available in the female baby changing room, but they are also available at reception.

Emergency Evacuation

Do you have emergency procedures?

Yes - We have written emergency procedures and carry out regular fire drills. The Fire Brigade officer works with us to ensure that the building is meeting the needs of fire regulations and staff are fully trained and practiced in the emergency evacuation procedures.

How would a wheelchair user escape in the event of a fire?

If possible you would make your way to the nearest fire exit. The staff are responsible for clearing their designated areas and would assist you as necessary e.g. using the pool hoist to help you exit from the water. The passenger lift cannot be used in the event of a fire but the platfrom lift can still be used as means of escape from the first floor gym. A designated refuge point is marked in the event of emergency escape being impossible due to the situation of the fire. if you have any concerns a staff member will talk you through this during your gym induction or first visit to the pools to reassure you that you will be safe.
